The WhatsApp Business API has no fixed monthly price from Meta. You pay per message, and the rate depends on what the message is for. In India, a marketing message costs ₹0.8631 and most other messages cost ₹0.115, before GST and your provider's fee. Here's how that turns into a real monthly bill.
WhatsApp API rates in India
These are Meta's October 2026 rates for messages sent to Indian numbers, excluding GST.
| Category | Used for | Rate per message |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Offers, announcements, re-engagement | ₹0.8631 |
| Utility | Order, delivery, booking and payment updates | ₹0.115 |
| Authentication | Login and verification codes | ₹0.115 |
| Service | Your replies inside the 24-hour customer service window | First 1,000 free per number each month, then ₹0.115 |
What you don't pay for
- Messages customers send to you.
- Messages that fail to deliver.
- The first 1,000 service messages per phone number each month.
- Everything you send in the free entry point window, which opens when a customer messages you from a Click to WhatsApp ad on the mobile app.
Replies used to be free without a limit, and utility templates sent during an open chat were free too. Both changed on October 1, 2026. Our guide to the WhatsApp API changes in 2026 covers the details.
Three example monthly bills
These use Meta's charges only, for one phone number, before GST and provider fees.
| Business | Monthly messages | Meta charges |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic | 3,000 utility reminders, 2,400 replies | ₹345 + ₹161 = ₹506 |
| Mobile app | 30,000 authentication, 10,000 utility, 500 replies | ₹3,450 + ₹1,150 + ₹0 = ₹4,600 |
| Online store | 20,000 marketing, 15,000 utility, 5,000 replies | ₹17,262 + ₹1,725 + ₹460 = ₹19,447 |
Marketing is what moves the bill. In the store example, it's 50% of the messages and about 89% of the cost.
What your provider adds
Unless you connect directly to Meta's Cloud API, you'll use a provider, usually called a WhatsApp BSP. Before you compare headline prices, ask each one:
- Is there a monthly plan, or do you only charge per message?
- What do you add on top of Meta's rate in each category?
- Is billing prepaid from a wallet, or postpaid?
- Are replies and the inbox included, or priced per user?
A per-message markup looks small until you multiply it. A ₹0.05 difference on 50,000 messages is ₹2,500 a month.
Estimate your own bill
Enter your monthly volumes and your current per-message prices in the free WhatsApp API cost calculator. It runs in your browser and doesn't need a sign-up. As an example, it starts with 10,000 marketing, 20,000 utility and 5,000 authentication messages at a typical provider's published prices, which comes to ₹14,525 a month against ₹12,356 on notifySphere. Your own prices will change that result.
How to lower the bill
- Keep utility templates strictly transactional. Promotional wording can get a template classed as marketing, at about 7.5 times the price. Run yours through the WhatsApp template checker before you submit it.
- Send marketing to smaller, relevant groups. Each delivered message is charged, whether or not the customer reads it.
- Use free replies well. Each number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, and they don't carry over.
- Watch AI agent costs. Meta Business Agent is billed by tokens, at $2 per million, on top of your other messaging.
WhatsApp pricing on notifySphere
notifySphere passes Meta's rate through at cost and adds a processing fee per message: ₹0.04 for marketing, ₹0.02 for utility, ₹0.01 for authentication and ₹0.02 for service. Billing is postpaid, with no deposit or prepaid wallet. See the WhatsApp Business API page or request free access.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost per message in India?
Meta's India rates are ₹0.8631 for a marketing message and ₹0.115 each for utility, authentication and service messages, before GST. Your provider may add its own fee per message or a monthly plan on top.
Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
Parts of it are. Messages customers send you are free, undelivered messages aren't charged, and each phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month. Marketing, utility and authentication templates are charged per delivered message.
How do I estimate my monthly WhatsApp API bill?
Multiply your monthly volume in each category by its rate, subtract 1,000 from your service messages per phone number, then add GST and your provider's fees. The free notifySphere cost calculator does the per-message part for you.
Why is my WhatsApp marketing message so much more expensive than a utility message?
Meta prices by category, and marketing costs about 7.5 times a utility message in India. If a template contains promotional content, Meta can class it as marketing even if you submitted it as utility.
Is GST included in WhatsApp API rates?
No. The rates Meta publishes for India exclude GST, so add it when you budget.
Does the rate depend on where my customer is?
Yes. Meta charges by the recipient's country. The rates in this guide apply to messages sent to Indian numbers, so messages to other countries will cost a different amount.
